Which side to look from
We determine rotation from the back side of the wheel. On a single inlet wheel, that is the closed side with the back plate. Tell us clockwise or counterclockwise as seen from that side, and tell us which side you looked from if you are not sure. We double-check from your photos.
Reading the blades
- Forward curve: the cupped, open face of each blade leads. The wheel turns in the direction the cups open toward.
- Backward inclined: the back of each blade leads. The blades lean away from the direction of rotation.
- Radial: the blades are straight, so look at the housing, the motor label or an arrow on the housing.
Other clues
Most blower housings have a rotation arrow cast or printed on them. The motor nameplate may show shaft rotation, but it is often given from the motor's own end, which can be the opposite view. When in doubt, send a photo of the wheel in the housing.

Questions
What happens if a blower wheel runs backward?
It still turns, but moves only a fraction of its rated air and can overheat the motor. Check rotation before ordering and after installing.
Can you make the same wheel in either rotation?
Yes. Every standard size can be built clockwise or counterclockwise.
